A $325 Serum Walks Into a Bar…

When did luxury skincare become synonymous with better skincare?

A $325 serum walks into a bar.

It has celebrity friends, beautiful packaging, an impressive pedigree, and some very expensive promises.

But does it have better skincare science?

Not necessarily.

The luxury skincare industry has mastered the art of making products feel extraordinary. Beautiful bottles, celebrity endorsements, exclusive formulations, and increasingly eye-watering price tags all contribute to the perception that expensive must mean better.

But as dermatologists, we think there's an important distinction worth making.

Luxury is a price point. Quality is a different conversation.

Not All Medical Expertise Is Skin Expertise

We're big believers in physician expertise. After all, Vetted DermLab was founded by three dermatologists.

But having a medical degree and having specialized expertise in skin biology, inflammatory skin disease, and contact allergies aren't necessarily the same thing.

And neither is a substitute for thoughtful formulation.

Great skincare can come from many places, including talented cosmetic chemists, researchers, and physicians from different specialties. What matters is whether the expertise behind a product translates into meaningful decisions about its ingredients, formulation, and intended use.

A doctor's name on a bottle can tell you something about its origins. It doesn't, by itself, tell you about the quality of the formulation.

The $98 Question

Let's be clear: we sell a $98 moisturizer.

We're hardly opposed to luxury skincare.

We love elegant textures, sophisticated formulations, beautiful packaging, and the pleasure of a skincare routine that feels special.

And we recognize that developing products with particular formulation requirements can be complex and expensive.

But we also believe consumers deserve to understand what they're paying for.

Is it a thoughtfully designed formulation? Ingredients selected for a specific purpose? A product developed with careful attention to quality and tolerability?

Or is much of the price driven by the brand experience?

There's nothing inherently wrong with paying for a brand experience. But it shouldn't be confused with formulation quality.

What Dermatologists Actually Think About

When we evaluate skincare, we don't start with the price tag.

We start with the skin.

Does the formulation support barrier function? Are the ingredients appropriate for the intended user? What is the potential for irritation or sensitization? Are the claims supported by relevant evidence?

And importantly, how do the ingredients work together in the finished formulation?

At Vetted DermLab, our experience treating patients with complex dermatitis and contact allergies informs how we approach these questions.

We're particularly interested in formulation decisions that rarely make it into marketing campaigns: ingredient compatibility, allergen selection, tolerability, and the trade-offs involved in creating products that feel luxurious without compromising our formulation standards.

Sometimes the most important ingredient decision is one consumers never notice.

What About Clinical Studies?

Clinical studies can be valuable. But the existence of a study doesn't automatically tell you how persuasive its findings are.

Was the finished product studied, or just an individual ingredient? Was there a comparison group? How many people participated? Were outcomes objectively measured, or were participants simply asked whether their skin felt better?

And who funded the research?

Industry-funded studies aren't inherently unreliable. Their methodology and results still deserve scrutiny.

We believe skincare claims should be evaluated on the quality of the evidence, not the impressiveness of the marketing language surrounding it.

So, Is a $325 Serum Worth It?

Maybe.

There are beautifully formulated products at nearly every price point, and there are perfectly ordinary products with extraordinary price tags.

Price alone can't tell you which is which.

And we're not going to pretend that our $98 moisturizer is inexpensive. It isn't. It's a premium product, developed with a very specific formulation philosophy and informed by our years of clinical dermatology experience.

But we think consumers should ask hard questions of every skincare brand, including ours.

What makes this formulation different? Why were these ingredients chosen? What evidence supports its claims? And is it right for my skin?

Because ultimately, the question isn't whether skincare should be luxurious.

It's whether the luxury is delivering something you actually value.

A luxury price tag is easy to create. A thoughtfully formulated product is considerably harder.
