A 365-Days-a-Year Habit You Want to Keep!

A 365-Days-a-Year Habit You Want to Keep!

We're happy the "New Years' Resolution" phase of the year is over. We can now enjoy brighter mornings and longer evenings! As the sun shines that little bit more each day, we're reminded to mention the importance of a daily habit to work into your routine: sunscreen.

The skin is an organ like any other in that it needs protection. Damage to the skin is not just caused by sunburn. It is a result consistent exposure without sunscreen protection.

Unfortunately, we can't stop the effects of ageing, but you can stop the accelerated ageing process by incorporating some simple habits into your daily routine.

Why Sunscreen Matters

According to SkinCancer.org, 90% of health and beauty changes can be attributed to sun exposure. In addition, years of UV exposure hinders our skin's ability to repair itself and our skin has to last a lifetime! What's more, your risk of developing melanoma doubles with a history of five or more burns.

Here are some simple habits to incorporate into your daily routine!

We know you're busy, so we're getting streaight to the point with 3 simple steps you can take each morning:

  • Cleanse daily: Pollution, excess oil and dead skin cells sit in your pores and so a morning cleanse should be top of your daily routine.
  • Serum is Second: A serum is similar to a concentrated moisturiser and delivers all the benefits deep into the skin.
  • SPF Everyday: This is a vital step, 365 days of the year. Even if it's cloudy. Consider SPF as the final stage in your morning skincare routine before applying make up.

Which Sunscreen?!

Struggling with sunscreens? Consider switching over to mineral based sunscreen.

Mineral sunscreens work by physically blocking light and are generally less irritating and have fewer contact allergens in them than chemical sunscreens (which work by being absorbed into the skin).

Here are some pro tips:

  • Active ingredients: Products containing zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, sometimes referred to as mineral or physical formulas, may be less likely to cause skin irritation in people who have sensitive skin.
  • Make it broad and at least 30: Make sure you get an SPF greater than 30. “Broad Spectrum” indicates that the sunscreen contains ingredients that effectively protect against UVA rays as well as UVB.
  • Screen versus scent: Always go for fragrance free.
  • Make up: Remember, you can always add foundation to a mineral sunscreen base to get the color to better match your skin.
  • Slather it on regularly: If you are outdoors, reapply your sunscreen every hour or so. Make sure you use more, rather than less! According to Skincacer.org: "For extended outdoor activity, use a water-resistant, broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating."
