We call it a "Use Test" in the patch test biz! And it is what people mean when they talk about "patch testing at home. It is a super simple and effective way to know if you are allergic to a new product at home.
Here is how to do it:
1. Pick your product: whether it be sunscreen, make up or a new moisturizer you can test it before you commit to using.
2. Apply desired product to the fold of your inner arm (nothing special about this spot, but easy to get the same place over and over) Apply product 2 x daily for 2 weeks to the same spot.
3. Do it for 2 weeks: If, after 2 weeks of application, there is no rash in the location (erythema, bumps or itching) you should be able to proceed using the product whereever you want!
